USES FOR RAS
(RECYCLED ASPHALT SHINGLES)
Primarily used in hot mix asphalt, RAS reduces demand on petroleum, virgin asphalt cement, as well as aggregate, while improving properties of hot mixed asphalt pavement. Performance improvements include increased stiffness, decreased cracking, reduced tendency to rutting, less tendency to sinking and decreased optimum content of virgin asphalt cement.
We have supplied RAS to plants in NY, CT, RI, MA, NJ ,MD, Canada as well as overseas (using 1-2 ton supersacs in intermodal containers). Rail delivery is now available for producers capable of off-loading stackable roll-off containers.
Recycled asphalt shingles in cold patch is well established. The advantages of using cold patch made from recycled asphalt shingles include longer life when compared to other patch materials. The cold patch material is easily applied, simply fill the pothole an inch over grade. No equipment is needed as the patch may be compressed by vehicle traffic. The cold patch is also easy to haul and can be stored longer because it does not “clump” as quickly as other material.
TEMPORARY ROADS, PATHS, OR TRAILS:
Recycled asphalt shingles are also used in temporary driveways and parking lot surfaces. Recycled shingles are typically ground to 1/4 inch and passes under a magnetic separator in order to remove nails. The processed shingles are spread and compacted for an easily installed surface. Recycled asphalt shingles can be ground and mixed into gravel used to cover rural or unpaved roads and fields. Dust is minimized, gravel is stabilized and vehicle noise is reduced. Also, less maintenance is required and the surface lasts longer.
